Flattering Silhouettes

The most crucial thing you can do is start out by finding a flattering silhouette for your photoshoot maternity dresses. We typically recommend a maxi dress that fits well on the top. We love flowy, drapey fabrics that don’t hug your bump too tightly. While those dresses definitely look fabulous in person, they simply don’t photograph as well. With looser, boho fits, you get lots of movement throughout your session. We also love floor-length and midi dresses because they look downright romantic!

Neutral Colors

While neutral color dresses are always best for photoshoots, they are especially helpful for your maternity sesh. We are here for one reason: to show off that adorable bump! If you stick with dark colors like black or navy, the bump won’t really be visible. By sticking with lighter, neutral colors, you can really highlight your baby while also having shades that look flattering and photograph well.

Dress for The Season

Yes, sure, that summery sundress might be lovely, but you don’t want to spend your entire maternity photoshoot freezing in a field in light dresses. We always suggest that our clients dress for the season. If it’s winter time, you can add layers like chunky cardigans and long-sleeved dresses. During the summertime, stick with breathable fabrics that aren’t too restrictive.

Comfort is Key!

Your body is doing a lot of hard work right now growing a baby. This should be a session to celebrate you! If you are feeling uncomfortable the entire time, a photo session can be a pretty bad experience, and it will probably show in the finished pictures. Choose comfortable options and put them to the test before your session. Remember, you are going to be moving a lot in your session. Practice different poses, and make sure you still like your choices ahead of time!
