How to Choose the Right Photographer for Your Family

Family of six who chose us as their Houston Newborn Photographer team

More Than Just Pretty Pictures

How to choose the right family photographer isn’t just about loving their work on Instagram. It’s about how you feel in the process, the level of care you receive, and whether or not the experience adds stress or takes it away.

When you’re looking for the right fit, ask yourself: Do I want to handle everything myself—outfits, hair and makeup, figuring out what to bring, wrangling my kids into smiling? Or do I want someone to take that all off my plate?

At Lentille Photography, we exist for the second kind of family. We make it easy, from start to finish. Because your energy should go toward showing up and being present with your family, not stressing over the details.

Questions That Matter

Here are a few questions to ask yourself as you compare photographers:

  • Do they offer wardrobe for the entire family, or will I need to shop for everyone myself?
  • Will I need to schedule my own hair and makeup artist, or is that included?
  • Do they send a prep guide and checklist so I know exactly what to expect?
  • Do they help with styling and make sure everything looks cohesive in photos?
  • Do they photograph in a studio or on location, and does that suit my family’s needs?

Every one of these decisions adds time and energy to your already full plate. So while a cheaper photographer might seem like a deal at first glance, you have to ask yourself: How much is my time and mental bandwidth worth?

What We Offer (And Why It Matters)

At Lentille, we handle everything:

  • Our wardrobe collection includes over 200 dresses for moms, shirts for dads, and outfits for babies and kids up to size 14. We style the entire family so you don’t have to think twice.
  • We connect you with our go-to hair and makeup artist, Aleya, who does 90% of what you see on our website. She can meet you at our studio or your home before your session.
  • We send helpful prep emails along the way, from what to bring to reminders a few days before your session.
  • Our cozy studio in The Heights (236 W 25th Street, Houston) is fully stocked with everything from a Restoration Hardware cradle to snacks and toys for older siblings.
  • If you prefer an in-home session, we just ask that your home has plenty of natural light and lighter décor so your photos stay true to the style you see on our website.

Experience Matters

We don’t just snap photos and send you a gallery. We walk you through the entire process—from reserving your session to delivering final artwork to your doorstep. Most clients choose a Collection that includes both digital files and printed pieces, so they don’t have to figure out printing themselves.

We also understand family dynamics. Allison used to be a labor and delivery nurse and is a mom of two. Monette has three kids. We’ve seen every version of chaos and calm, and we know how to read the room, soothe a fussy baby, or get a genuine smile from a skeptical seven-year-old.

The Real Cost of Doing It All Yourself

So often, we hear this: “We were going to go with someone cheaper and just do hair, makeup, and outfits ourselves.”

And then? They don’t follow through. Or it’s stressful. Or they hate the way they look in the photos because they didn’t feel put together. Or the photos never even happen.

That’s the hidden cost of doing it all yourself. What if you could make one decision and have everything taken care of for the next year? Our Early Years Membership lets you do just that. You choose 2–4 sessions during pregnancy and baby’s first year, and we handle everything for each one. One email, and you’re set.

What to Look for in Their Work (That Isn’t Just Aesthetic)

When reviewing a photographer’s portfolio, ask:

  • Do the families in these photos look relaxed?
  • Does the photographer seem to capture emotion, or just poses?
  • Are there diverse family types and ages?
  • Does it feel like real life—or just a pretty setup?

At Lentille, we focus on connection. Real interactions. The way your partner looks at you holding your newborn, or the way your child leans into your arms without thinking. It’s not about perfect smiles. It’s about remembering how it felt.

In Summary: Choose Ease

You can absolutely DIY parts of your photo session. But the truth is, you’re already doing so much. And if the goal is to be in the photos, relaxed and present, you need someone who will make that possible.

That’s what we do. We take care of the details so you can take care of your people.

Choosing the right photographer isn’t just about the price tag. It’s about how you want to feel—before, during, and after the session. If you want it to feel like a gift instead of another task, you might have just found your people.
