Newborn and Family Photos With Grandparents: When to Schedule (Especially if They’re Visiting Houston)

If you’re wondering whether grandparents can be included in your newborn and family photos, you’re not alone. Families ask this all the time, usually a little quietly, like they’re worried it’s going to make things complicated.

And I get it. because newborn and family life already feels like a lot. The idea of adding more people (and more opinions) can feel like you’re setting yourself up for stress.

But the truth is, newborn and family photos with grandparents are some of the most meaningful images you’ll ever have. Not just because they’re sweet, but because they tell a much bigger story.

Including grandparents in your newborn or family photos

Can grandparents be included in newborn and family photos?

Newborn and family photos with grandparents? Always a “yes”. You can absolutely include grandparents in newborn and family photos, and we genuinely encourage it. Two grandparents are included in all of our full sessions because that’s how much we believe they deserve to be in photos, too.

This doesn’t mean your session turns into a big group portrait marathon, either. We plan it in a way that feels calm and intentional, so you still get all the quiet, connection-focused moments with just your immediate family.

Most sessions that include grandparents typically include a few images like this: we make sure to do our typical workflow, but then we bring in grandparents for various combinations. It’s simple, it flows naturally, and it doesn’t take over the entire session.

When to schedule newborn or family photos with grandparents (especially if they’re visiting Houston)

If grandparents are coming into town, timing matters. The easiest way to include them is to schedule your session while they’re already here and available, so it doesn’t become another logistical headache.

Ideally, newborn photos happen within the first two weeks after baby arrives. Babies are often sleepier during this time, and it tends to be the window when grandparents are most likely still in that “fresh newborn bubble” with you and in town.

That said, there’s no rigid rule here. If baby comes early, arrives later than expected, or you need more time to recover, we simply adjust. What matters most is that the session feels doable and that you’re supported, not rushed.

Planning a family session? We can time it so they’re in town, or available, making everything seamless and easy.

If grandparents are only visiting Houston for a short window, simply tell us ahead of time. We can always make it work, and we’ll build a session plan that keeps things calm while still getting the images you want. Newborn and family photos with grandparents are worth the extra effort to schedule everything so everyone can attend the session.

How we include grandparents without making it feel overwhelming

This is the part most parents are relieved by. We don’t just say “sure” and then throw everyone into the room together.

We plan it.

Grandparents usually come for a portion of the session, then head out or downstairs to relax while the rest of the session happens. That way you get the photos you want with them included, but the rest of the session stays quiet and focused on your immediate family.

It also prevents that “crowded room” feeling. Most parents don’t mind having grandparents involved, they just don’t want to feel like they’re in the middle of chaos, and this keeps it from turning into that.

What grandparents should wear for newborn and family photos (and yes, hair and makeup is available for them too)

This is one of the biggest hesitations people have. They want grandparents included, but they’re worried it won’t look cohesive, or that grandparents won’t know what to wear.

So let me make this easy. Our Studio Wardrobe is available for grandparents too. Even better? You can add-on hair and makeup for grandma as well.

We have 225+ dresses, plus styling options that photograph beautifully and keep everything looking polished without being stiff. We also have wardrobe options for men, including shirts that work well on camera and keep the overall look clean and elevated.

And if grandparents prefer to wear their own clothes, that’s fine too. We just guide them toward pieces that feel classic and photograph well, so nobody is stressed about “what am I supposed to wear” or showing up in white polos.

Keepsakes for grandparents: albums and prints you’ll actually be glad you did

Something we’ve seen shift over the last few years is how families feel about digital images. People still want digital files, of course, but there’s been a big realization happening.

Parents have every intention to print their favorites…and then they don’t. Life gets busy. Months fly by. The photos live on a phone, and that’s the end of it.

But when grandparents are included, families start thinking a little differently. They don’t just want a folder of images, they want something tangible. Something that lives in their home and gets held and flipped through and passed around.

That’s why we offer keepsakes specifically for grandparents, like grandparent albums and professional prints. It’s one of the easiest ways to make sure these images don’t disappear into the endless scroll of your camera roll.

Comfort matters: how we avoid stiff, awkward posing

If the phrase “grandparent photos” makes you picture stiff shoulders and forced smiles, you are not alone. That’s what people are worried about when they ask this question, even if they don’t say it out loud.

Our sessions are connection-focused. We guide you, but we’re not forcing anyone into unnatural poses or creating awkward “everyone smile at the camera” energy.

We focus on the bond. The way grandparents hold a newborn. The way they look at them. The way the baby fits into hands that have held your family for decades. Those are the moments that matter, and they’re what make these photos feel real.

What if your family dynamic is complicated?

Also normal. Also manageable. You aren’t the only one who needs a whiteboard to explain family dynamics.

If you love your parents, but maybe they aren’t together, or are remarried, tell us. We can create a session flow that protects your space while still including them in a way that feels meaningful.

Sometimes that means photographing immediate family first, then bringing grandparents in. Sometimes it means each grandparent comes for a short portion and then head out. Whatever the situation, we can plan around it.

The goal is that you leave feeling like it was easier than you expected. Not like you survived it.

The truth: these photos become more valuable every year

Newborn and family photos are special no matter what, but the ones with grandparents? They are different.

They aren’t just documenting a baby or a family. They’re documenting your family’s story in a bigger way: multiple generations in one frame, at the beginning of a chapter you’ll never get back.

And years from now, you’re not just going to see what your baby or kiddos looked like. You’re going to see who was there, who loved them from the start, and what that season felt like.

That’s why we encourage it. And that’s why families are always so glad they did. 🤍
