What to Expect From a Newborn Photography Session in Houston

Before we talk about outfits or locations or pretty pictures, let’s talk about the part nobody says out loud: Most parents are not worried about the photos, they are worried about the experience and what it takes to get to those beautiful photos.

They are thinking:
Will my baby cry the whole time?
What if my toddler melts down?
What if I look exhausted?
What if this feels awkward?
What if we are late?
What if I do everything wrong?

That makes sense. becayse you are suddenly in a season where nothing feels predictable. There are a million things to do, you’re entering uncharted waters, and are relying on Google and friends to give you encouragement.

A good Houston newborn photographer is not just someone who knows how to use a camera. It is someone who knows how to create a space where you can exhale.

That is what this should feel like.

What a newborn session is supposed to feel like

Newborn photography should not feel like something you have to perform for.

It should feel slow.
It should feel quiet.
It should feel supportive.
it should feel easy.

At the Lentille Studio, every session is baby-led. That means we do not rush, we follow your baby’s cues, and if they need to eat, we pause. If they need to be held, we hold them. If they are wide awake, we photograph that too.

There is no such thing as a “bad baby” at a newborn session. There are just babies being babies. I always give a reminder that babies don’t get the memo on picture day, they don’t read the same parenting books, and so we have to go with the flow (this is also why we don’t time any of our sessions).

Studio newborn photography in Houston

Many families choose to have their newborn photos taken at our studio in The Heights, and here is why:

The light is consistent and soft.
The temperature is warm for babies (but not too hot for postpartum mamas).
The furniture and backdrops are designed for photography.
Everything you need is already there.

You do not have to clean your house.
You do not have to worry about window light.
You do not have to host anyone.

You just walk in and let someone else take care of you for a little while.

For parents who are freshly postpartum, that matters more than they realize.

In-home newborn photography

Some families prefer in-home newborn sessions, especially if they love the idea of photos that feel very personal and documentary.

In-home newborn photography in Houston can be beautiful, but it depends heavily on:
• Natural light in your home
• Wall colors and furniture
• How much space you have

If your home is bright and you love the idea of photographing your baby in their nursery or on your couch, this can be a wonderful option.

If you want clean, styled, light-filled images that look like what you see on our website, a studio session is usually the better fit.

Think of it this way: if you love the photos we’ve taken but your home has beautiful darker walls, dark leather furniture, and pops of bold colors? We aren’t able to create our signature look in your home. The images will still be beautiful, but if you’re looking for that light, bright, crisp look? Plan on visiting us instead.

What you should wear (and why you do not need to stress)

This is one of the biggest sources of anxiety. Finding things you believe will photograph beautifully, then coordinating the whole family, then buying clothes that you’ll wear once (for about an hour), making inevitable returns when certain things look different than online. It’s all overwhelming!

You just had a baby. Your body feels different. Your closet suddenly feels unhelpful.

That is why we provide a full studio wardrobe for moms, babies, and siblings, and even shirts for dads We choose pieces that photograph beautifully, feel comfortable, and fit your body right now. You do not have to buy anything new or try to guess what works.

Your job is not to style yourself. Your job is to show up.

Professional hair and makeup for your newborn session

This part is optional, but most moms are so (so!) glad they did it.

Professional hair and makeup is available for our newborn sessions, and it can easily be done in your home or at the studio. We love and recommend Aleya with Freckle Face Makeup, because working with her is like a warm hug. She will make you feel beautiful, listen to exactly what you’re wanting for your hair and makeup, and the best part? She is so fast and only takes about an hour.

It is not about looking “done up.”
It is about looking like yourself on a really good day, and Aleya does just that with her signature “soft glam” look.

When you feel taken care of, it shows in the photos.

Including siblings, grandparents, and pets in your newborn session

Yes, you can absolutely include them, and we always encourage it.

Your pup is welcome to join, and we include one set of grandparents per session. This allows families to bring different loved ones across their time with us, which means you can beautifully document multiple generations as your family grows. Those images tend to become some of the most meaningful ones you have.

We are deeply family-focused, so siblings are always a given. And for so many families, dogs are truly their first baby, so of course they belong in this chapter too. Grandparents are always welcome as well. There is something incredibly special about seeing multiple generations together, especially with a brand-new baby in the middle.

If you’d like to include your pup or grandparents, just let us know ahead of time so we can plan for it. We typically ask that someone comes along to help manage your dog during the session, and grandparents are also welcome to add professional hair and makeup or borrow from the Studio Wardrobe if they’d like.

When to schedule your newborn session

The best time to schedule your newborn photos is during your early second trimester.

We will go ahead and pencil-in a date that’s 10-14 days after your due date, and then we can always adjust that based on the baby’s arrival. If they come early? Simply let us know and we can move your session sooner. If they come late? We push it out a bit. If you need more time to recover? Totally understandable and we can adjust everything so you are feeling good during our time together.

And, if your baby is already here and you are just now realizing you want photos? You are not too late. We’ve photographed newborns at 8 days old and 8 weeks old, and they are both just as sweet. Your baby does not suddenly stop being your baby because the calendar changed.

What happens after your newborn session with us?

After your newborn photography session, you’ll have a two-day online ordering appointment.

You’ll view your fully edited images, explore the collections available to you, and choose what you love.

Most families select a collection that includes both digital images and artwork for their home. Over the last few years, we’ve seen a big shift. Parents often intend to print their favorite photos, but life gets busy and it never quite happens. At the same time, many realize they don’t just want files on a hard drive. They want their home to actually reflect their family.

That’s where we come in.

We make it easy to turn your images into something you can see and touch every day. Your artwork arrives at your door, ready to enjoy or hang on your walls, and all of the design work is handled for you. All you have to do is look it over and say “approved.”
