Preparing Your Kids for Family Photos (No Bribes Required)

Let’s set the tone (and drop the bribes)

We get it—you’re investing time, money, and energy into your family photo session, and you really want it to go well. Maybe you’ve already imagined the image that’ll hang in the hallway or grace your holiday cards this year. So it’s tempting to start prepping your kids with a pep talk, a few “if/then” warnings, and maybe even an ice cream bribe.

But here’s the thing: threats and bribes are the fastest way to ruin the energy of a session.

We’ve seen it so many times. A well-meaning parent tells their child, “No ice cream if you don’t smile,” or “We’re not going to Disney if you don’t behave.” The result? Kids feel pressured, embarrassed, and disconnected—and we end up with photos where everyone looks tense and no one looks like themselves.

Our approach? Ditch the pressure. Skip the pep talk. Let us take the lead.

What actually works: low-stress prep

Your job on photo day is to show up. That’s it.

If your kids are toddlers through about age eight (where most families are who feel this way), the best prep you can do is give them a calm, low-key day. Let them sleep in. Feed them something they actually like. If they nap, let them nap. And then simply tell them, “We’re going to meet a new friend who’s going to take some pictures.”

That’s it. No expectations. No begging. No performance pressure.

Because once you’re in the studio or on location, we take over.

We’ve been doing this for over thirteen years, and between our own children and hundreds of families, we’ve seen every type of personality. Wild and silly? Shy and unsure? Doesn’t want to let go of mom? We love it all.

Your children will be met with kindness, playfulness, and patience. We’ll talk to them at their level, figure out what makes them laugh, and build trust from the very beginning. Most kids forget they’re at a session entirely. They’re too busy playing peek-a-boo, racing mom to the bed, or watching us make total fools of ourselves to worry about the camera.

The only thing that throws off a session

It’s not toddlers. It’s not picky eaters. It’s not kids who don’t want to smile.

It’s energy.

If you’re stressed, threatening, or visibly frustrated with your kids, that becomes the tone of your session. And no amount of editing can fix red-rimmed eyes or the hurt that comes from a kid feeling like they’re not doing it “right.”

So trust us when we say: your kids are already perfect. You don’t need to get them to “perform.” Just let them show up and be themselves. That’s what we’re here to photograph.

What if they’re shy?

Then we meet them where they are. Sometimes that means mom is behind us playing peek-a-boo or dad is showing off his best dance moves to get a giggle. We’ll never force a smile or ask your child to do anything that doesn’t feel natural to them. Instead, we follow their lead, build connections, and wait for the magic to unfold.

Let go of the outcome—just for today

We know it’s hard. You want the perfect photo. You’ve dreamed about this moment. But the most beautiful, real images happen when you’re in it with your family, not trying to control it.

Laugh with your kids. Snuggle close. Let someone else handle the chaos for a change.

We’ll take it from here.
