What to Wear for Fall Family Photos Doesn’t Have to Be Hard

Let’s be honest. You have been thinking about what to wear for fall family photos since approximately July and somehow it’s already almost time and you still haven’t figured out what you’re wearing.

We see you. We are you. And we’re here to fix it.

After 14 years of photographing Houston families, we have seen every outfit choice imaginable — the ones that made us gasp in the best way and the ones that made us quietly pray the session would save them. We know what photographs beautifully in golden hour Texas light, what holds up in print ten years from now, and what makes a mom feel like herself instead of like she’s wearing a costume.

This is that guide. With shoppable links, because we respect your time.

Start With Mom. Always Start With Mom.

Here’s the rule that changes everything: mom picks her outfit first, and everyone else builds around her.

Not because everything is about mom (okay, maybe a little because everything is about mom), but because her dress sets the entire color palette for the session. Once you know her colors, tones, and vibe, dressing everyone else becomes so much easier. Dad pulls a neutral that complements her. Kids wear tones that live within her palette. The whole family looks cohesive without anyone looking like they tried too hard.

So. Let’s talk about your dress.

The Case for Neutrals (And Why They Never Age)

Every year we see the same thing: families who wore trendy colors or bold prints look at their photos five years later and cringe a little. Not because the photos aren’t beautiful, but because the outfits date them instantly.

Neutrals don’t do that.

A warm cream maxi dress photographed in golden hour Texas light looks just as beautiful in 2026 as it will in 2036. It doesn’t compete with the landscape, it doesn’t pull the eye away from your family’s faces, and it doesn’t scream any particular year or trend. It just glows.

That said, neutrals don’t have to be boring. Texture is everything. A linen midi with subtle draping, a chiffon maxi that moves in the breeze, a smocked bodice with flowing skirt — these are the details that make a neutral dress feel rich and intentional on camera rather than plain.

The Warm Neutral Picks (Our Forever Favorites)

These are the dresses that make us stop mid-session and say “wait, that’s incredible.”

Free People Calypso Maxi Dress in Tea Combo Warm, earthy, and absolutely stunning in fall light. The Tea Combo colorway is basically made for a golden hour session in a field. This one photographs like a dream and feels like something you’d actually wear again.

Free-EST Marsai Maxi Dress in Tofu Tofu is the neutral we didn’t know we needed. Soft, warm, creamy — it sits beautifully against fall foliage and coordinates with literally everything. If you want to look effortless without trying, this is the dress.

Free-EST Marsai Maxi Dress in Bitter Bark For the mom who wants something a little deeper and moodier, Bitter Bark is everything. It’s warm and rich without being too dark, and it photographs with incredible dimension.

Free People Dixie Maxi in Egret Egret is that soft, barely-there neutral that makes every photo look like it belongs in a magazine. Flowing, romantic, and impossibly flattering.

Free People Sweet Tea Maxi Dress The name alone. Sweet Tea. Very Texas, very golden hour, very perfect for a fall session in a field at sunset.

The Flowy and Romantic Picks

These are the dresses that move beautifully and make moms feel like the main character. Because you are.

Nigel Preston Floating Angel Chiffon Maxi Dress The name is Floating Angel and it delivers exactly that. Chiffon catches the light in a way no other fabric does, and this dress is going to look absolutely incredible in motion.

Falling Petals Maxi Dress Delicate, feminine, and stunning. If you want something that feels special without being over the top, this is it.

Free People Weeping Willows Maxi in Tea Combo The texture on this one photographs with so much depth. Warm toned, flowing, and exactly the kind of dress that makes a gallery look editorial.

Free People Fiona Maxi Dress Classic Free People magic. Effortless, beautiful, and the kind of dress you wear to your session and then wear again to every fall event on your calendar.

Free-EST A Masterpiece Maxi Dress The name says it all and it is not wrong.

The Ivory and White-Adjacent Picks

White and ivory photograph differently than you’d expect in fall light — instead of reading as stark or bright, they glow warmly in golden hour and look absolutely stunning against fall foliage and earthy tones.

Free-EST In My Dreams Midi Dress in Ivory A midi length is so underrated for family sessions. It’s a little unexpected, still elegant, and this ivory colorway is going to be beautiful.

Free People Weeping Willows Maxi in Blue Combo For the mom who wants something a little unexpected, this blue combo is so pretty in fall light. Muted and soft enough to feel cohesive without competing with anyone else’s outfit.

Now Build the Family Around Her

Once you’ve picked your dress, here’s how to pull everyone else together without making it a whole thing:

Dad: Neutral pants (linen, khaki, tan, or warm gray) with a textured top — a linen button down, a knit henley, or a casual blazer if you want to go slightly elevated. Clean shoes. No athletic sneakers, no graphic tees, no bright white shirts that pull the eye. That’s it. That’s the whole formula.

Kids: Pull one or two colors directly from your dress, or choose a floral, stripe, or check, and build their outfits around those. If you’re in a warm cream with earthy tones, put the kids in soft browns, creams, and warm neutrals. Simple silhouettes, comfortable fabrics, nothing stiff or scratchy that’s going to make them miserable halfway through the session.

Babies and toddlers: Soft neutrals, linen, cotton. A simple romper or a little dress for girls. A linen set for boys. Barefoot is completely fine and honestly adorable for little ones.

What NOT to Wear (We Say This With Love)

  • Neon anything
  • Big logos or graphic tees
  • Busy patterns that compete with each other
  • Everyone in the exact same outfit (coordinate, don’t match)
  • Stiff fabrics that don’t move
  • Anything that wrinkles if you look at it wrong (or pack Downy wrinkle spray)
  • Shoes that don’t make sense for a field (looking at you, stilettos)

About Our Sessions (And Why You Might Not Need to Shop at All)

Our fall outdoor sessions take place at a gorgeous private field just 8 minutes from our Houston Heights studio. Sessions are typically at sunset when the light is absolutely ridiculous in the best way — think golden, warm, dreamy, the kind of light that makes every photo look like it was taken on purpose.

And here’s something worth knowing: if the shopping and coordinating feels like too much, our Studio Wardrobe has over 225 dresses for moms, coordinating pieces for kids, and shirts for dads. All of it is included when you reserve your session. You can literally show up with nothing and walk out looking like you planned everything perfectly for months.

Fall outdoor dates are filling up fast. If it’s been on your radar, now is the time.
