When to Schedule Your Houston Maternity Session (and Why It Matters)

The Sweet Spot for Maternity Pictures in Houston
One of the most common questions we get as a Houston maternity photographer is: “When should I schedule my maternity session?” And while there’s no one-size-fits-all answer, there is a window that works beautifully for most expecting parents.
We typically recommend scheduling maternity pictures between 28 and 32 weeks. That said, every bump is different. Some moms show early and are ready for photos by 26 weeks, while others don’t have a prominent bump until 34 weeks. The sweet spot is when your belly is beautifully round, but you’re still feeling comfortable enough to enjoy the experience. That balance makes a big difference—you want to feel like yourself, not swollen, tired, or sore.
Why Timing Makes a Difference
The timing of your maternity session affects more than just your comfort. Here’s why it matters:
- Bump visibility: This is the stage when your bump has that perfect curve—a visible, beautiful shape that photographs well from every angle.
- Energy levels: Most women feel better during the second trimester and early third trimester. Later in pregnancy, fatigue, swelling, or back pain can make standing, walking, or changing outfits more challenging.
- Wardrobe fit: Our studio wardrobe is designed to fit a range of sizes, but it always photographs best when your bump is full, round, and comfortable in our curated pieces.
As a Houston maternity photographer who has worked with hundreds of growing families, we’ve seen firsthand how the right timing leads to the most confident, joyful, and emotionally rich portraits.
Indoor or Outdoor? Both Are Beautiful

At Lentille Photography, we offer both in-studio and outdoor maternity sessions in Houston. Each setting offers something special, and timing plays a slightly different role depending on the style you choose.
- Studio maternity pictures in Houston are typically scheduled at 10am or 12pm. These sessions happen at our space in The Heights (236 W 25th Street, Houston, TX 77008), where we have everything ready for you—wardrobe, hair and makeup, a bed, stools, Restoration Hardware cradle, and so much more. It’s calm, cozy, and perfect for a more intimate feel.
- Outdoor maternity photography in Houston happens at the Houston Arboretum around sunset. Everyone meets at the studio about two hours before golden hour to get ready, and then we head out for that beautiful, glowy light. If you’re dreaming of soft light and nature-filled images, this option might be for you.
Both styles are available to all clients, and we can help you decide what fits best for your vision and comfort level.
When to Reserve Your Session (Spoiler: It’s Sooner Than You Think)
We recommend reserving your maternity session during your second trimester. This ensures you get on the calendar at your ideal time, especially if you’re hoping for a fall or spring session—two of our busiest seasons. While we do keep a few openings for last-minute inquiries, most clients secure their session well in advance to avoid scheduling stress.
We know it can feel like a lot to think about planning photos while you’re still navigating pregnancy, but that’s where we come in. Our job is to make the entire process easy and enjoyable, so once you reserve your date, you can relax knowing we’ll handle the rest.
The Gift You Didn’t Know You Needed
So many of our clients tell us that maternity photos felt like a gift to themselves—a moment to pause, reflect, and celebrate what their body has done. In a season that can feel overwhelming, maternity photography becomes a way to feel beautiful again.
We hear it all the time: “I didn’t feel like myself and almost skipped this,” or “I wasn’t sure I’d like how I looked.” But the thing is, no one regrets it. Whether you end up framing your images or tucking them away for later, you’ll be glad they exist. The days of pregnancy might feel long, but you blink and it’s over.Even if it doesn’t always feel glamorous, it’s extraordinary.
What If You’re Further Along?

Don’t worry—we’ve photographed plenty of clients at 36, 37, even 38 weeks. One client came in for her maternity pictures and had her baby later that same night. If you’re nearing the end of your pregnancy and wondering if you still have time, the answer is yes.
We’ll always adjust the session to match your energy and comfort. Whether that means staying seated more, choosing fewer outfit changes, or letting you take breaks in between, we’re here for it. Our sessions are always baby- and mama-led.
How the Early Years Membership Makes It All Easier
The beauty of our Early Years Membership is that it takes care of everything from now through the baby’s first year. Most clients begin with a maternity session and then reserve 2-4 sessions over 15 months. Once you’re in, you don’t have to think about timelines or planning again—we’ll walk you through every next step.
If you’re not quite ready to commit to the membership yet, you can reserve a single session and decide after you view your images. Many families upgrade during their online ordering appointment once they realize how much they love the experience (and how fast that first year flies).
You Deserve This
Pregnancy can feel like a blur. Between checkups, planning, and just trying to stay comfortable, the weeks pass quickly. Taking time to document this moment is a gift you give not only to yourself, but to your child, your partner, and the future you who will look back in awe.
