Why In-Home Newborn Sessions Aren’t Always the Right Fit

The idea sounds dreamy—but there’s more to it

We get it. The idea of staying home with your brand new baby, cuddling up in your own space, and having someone come to you for newborn photos? It sounds like the most comfortable option. And sometimes, it can be.

But here’s the thing most newborn photographers won’t tell you: in-home sessions only work when very specific things come together. And the truth is, most new parents just don’t need one more thing to manage or worry about.

That’s where our studio comes in—and why so many families are relieved they didn’t try to do it all at home.

Your house doesn’t have to be photo-ready

With a newborn in your arms, there’s enough on your plate already. And while in-home photos sound easy, what often gets overlooked is the need for a clean, clutter-free, beautifully lit space.

Think about it: would you want to tidy up your home, clear off countertops, hide bottles and burp cloths, vacuum, and make sure there’s no laundry pile in the corner… just for a photo session?

Or would you rather walk into a perfectly styled, beautifully lit studio where everything is already taken care of?

We’ve had so many clients tell us, “I thought I wanted an in-home session, but I’m so glad I didn’t have to stress about the mess.” That peace of mind? It matters.

Natural light and light decor are key (and most homes don’t have both)

One of the biggest factors in creating those light, airy images you see on our website is light itself. Our studio in The Heights was designed specifically with this in mind—big windows, soft colors, and the kind of setup that makes skin tones glow and shadows fall just right.

In-home sessions only work if your home has a lot of natural light and light or neutral-colored walls and decor. And unfortunately, navy walls or limited light can completely change the look of your images.

Before we agree to an in-home session, we always ask for pictures of your space—because we want you to love the end result. And we’ll be honest if we think your home won’t translate into the style you’re drawn to.

Toddlers at home? That can actually make things harder

We often hear, “We want our toddler to feel comfortable, so we thought staying home would help.”

Totally valid… but here’s the surprising truth: toddlers often do better in the studio.

Why? Because being home means distractions. Toys, snacks, the TV, friends dropping by, their room just down the hall—it’s hard to compete with that. But when toddlers come to our studio, they’re curious, present, and (usually) more cooperative because the space is new and exciting.

It also helps that we’ve seen it all—Allison has two boys, and Monette has three kids of her own. We know how to meet toddlers where they are, keep them engaged, and roll with the chaos in a way that feels calm and natural.

We’ve already done the prep—so you don’t have to

Hair and makeup? Handled. Over 200 dresses for moms, wardrobe for the whole family, delicate wraps and headbands for baby? Already waiting at the studio.

Instead of spending your morning digging through your closet and wondering if your partner’s shirt will match, you get to show up, settle in, and let us take care of everything.

And yes, we’ll also guide you every step of the way—before, during, and after your session. From the prep email to the two-day online ordering appointment, we’re here to make the entire experience feel like a breath of fresh air.

But wait—what if I really want an in-home session?

If that’s where your heart is, we’re not going to say no. We’ve done in-home sessions that turned out beautifully. But we’ll always make sure the conditions are right: great natural light, light decor, and a calm environment that allows us to do what we do best.

We’ll never say yes just to say yes. Your photos should feel like what you see on our website—not like a compromise. And if your home allows for that? We’re game.

What most photographers don’t tell you

We’ve had more than a few clients come to us after working with another photographer and say, “The session was okay, but the photos didn’t turn out the way I hoped.” Usually, it’s because the photographer didn’t communicate just how much things like lighting, decor, and environment impact the final result.

We don’t want you to end up with photos that don’t feel like you—or that don’t look anything like the gallery you fell in love with.

The studio experience is a gift, not a hassle

This isn’t just about logistics. It’s about giving yourself a beautiful, calm, connected experience during one of the most tender seasons of your life.

We’ve created a space that feels like a warm exhale. Where you can show up, breathe, and let someone else take the reins for once. That’s not something you get when you’re moving laundry baskets out of the frame and worrying about nap schedules in your own living room.

So if you’re on the fence, here’s the question we’ll leave you with:

Do you want to carry the weight of making everything perfect… or just show up and have it all taken care of?

That’s what we’re here for.
